FTC vs Facebook

„U.S. regulator weighs action against Facebook over how its apps interact – The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is considering asking a court to stop Facebook Inc from moving ahead with plans to integrate its WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger subsidiaries, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. – Facebook shares closed 2.7% lower, reflecting fears the potential regulatory move could be a first step toward forcing the company to sell apps WhatsApp and Instagram, its fast-growing acquisitions. – Facebook has plans to allow users of its units Messenger, WhatsApp and the direct messaging system within Instagram to communicate with each other, and end-to-end encryption will be extended across the three services.“

„Facebook spends $130 million to fund content oversight board – Facebook said on Thursday that the company has made an initial commitment of $130 million to fund a trust for its global content oversight board. The board was established in 2018 as an independent authority to help users appeal Facebook’s content moderation decisions. – Facebook explained that it expects the board’s staff to include ‚a director, case managers and dedicated staff members (or contracted services) who can support things such as the board’s communications, legal, human resources and research needs.‘ – It also said the trust will have at least three individual trustees and a corporate trustee. The tech giant added it’s currently conducting a search for the individual trustees, which will be announced next year.“

„Interpreter, Google’s real-time translator, comes to mobile – After rolling out on smart speakers and displays earlier this year, Google’s interpreter real-time translation mode is finally landing on mobile. A far more handy application for such functionality, the feature arrives on both Android and iOS handsets globally, starting today. … The feature is now available in 44 languages (full list here), up from the 29 available on the smart displays/speakers. It’s integrated directly into the Google Assistant app, negating the need to download an additional translation app. Between this and Lens, Google’s apps have quickly become a necessary part of traveling abroad.“

„Microsoft’s next Xbox is Xbox Series X, coming holiday 2020 – Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox is officially called Xbox Series X. Microsoft revealed the name and console design on stage at the Game Awards today. The console itself looks far more like a PC than we’ve seen from previous Xbox consoles, and Microsoft’s trailer provides a brief glimpse at the new design. … The Xbox One X is 6 teraflops of GPU performance, so the Xbox Series X could be capable of 12 teraflops.“
