Demnach wurden in mehr als 522.000 dieser Artikel, die zwischen dem 1. Januar und dem 26. Mai veröffentlicht wurden, falsche Informationen zum Coronavirus erwähnt. In der nach eigener Aussage ersten großangelegten Studie [PDF], die klassische und Onlinemedien auf Corona-Desinformationen untersuchte, kommen die Forscher aus Ithaca zu dem Schluss, ‚dass der Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten wahrscheinlich der größte Treiber für COVID-19-Desinformation war‘. In 37,9 Prozent der Fälle von Falschinformation sei Donald Trump genannt worden. … Keine Falschinformation kann sich ohne Medien verbreiten. US-Präsident Trump nutzte auch während der Pandemie den Kurzmitteilungsdienst Twitter, um seinen Ansichten zum Coronavirus zu verbreiten. Darüber hinaus boten aber auch die Massenmedien ihm und seinen Behauptungen eine Plattform. – Das Forscherteam der Universität Cornell fand heraus, dass nur in 16,4 Prozent der Fälle von verbreiteten Desinformationen ein journalistischer Faktencheck stattgefunden habe. Die Mehrheit der Falschbehauptungen sei somit ohne Hinterfragung oder Korrektur verbreitet worden. Die Medien spielen daher eine ‚übergroße Rolle‘ bei der Verbreitung von Desinformation. ‚Durch unkritische Berichterstattung über Aussagen und Bemerkungen durch einflussreiche Persönlichkeiten, ohne diese notwendigerweise zu verifizieren oder die Korrektheit der Behauptungen zu prüfen, riskieren Medien ungewollt [sic!] zur Verbreitung von Desinformation beizutragen‘, heißt es in der Schlussfolgerung der Studie.“
